Frequently asked questions
We are proud that Café Ursula has been at the heart of many stories for several generations. Its future is of great interest, and that’s why we have compiled the questions asked to us along with their answers. We hope you’ll find the answers to any questions you may have. You can also comment or ask more here.
The original building from 1952 no longer exists, as it has been expanded multiple times over the years. A feasibility study revealed that the building, originally designed as a summer café, has reached the end of its technical lifespan, and renovating it is not cost-effective. The repair backlog is significant, and no elements worth preserving were found in the structure.
The Ursula building is not protected, and due to numerous expansions, nothing remains of the original café structure.
The permitting process is about to begin in good cooperation with the city.
While the building certainly has cultural and historical value, that value will not be lost: the new building will be designed with respect for its rich history and unique location, following the architectural style of the old building.
It will not. Café Ursula will continue as a café and restaurant, just as it is known. As the former owner, Kansan Sivistysrahasto sr will remain involved with a one-third ownership.
Ursula will serve customers as usual until the fall of 2026, when the construction work is expected to begin.
The construction of the new Ursula is expected to be completed in the spring of 2027, with the opening tentatively planned for 1st of May.
It will not be lost. Firstly, the spirit of Ursula comes from the staff, the atmosphere, and the customers. Secondly, the new building will honor the stunning location and follow the familiar shapes of the old building, such as the round roof of Merisali and the terrace area framed by the white sail.
Renovating a building at the end of its technical lifespan to meet the requirements of modern restaurant operations and customer traffic would not have been cost-effective. Replacing the old building with a new one, suitable for year-round restaurant use and in harmony with the landscape and cultural heritage, ensures the continuation of operations well into the future. At the same time, the building’s foundations will be raised to the flood level recommended by the city, and basic improvements will be made to the yard area.
The plans are not that advanced yet, as Ursula will remain open until the fall of 2026.
Under the guidance of architects, we have been in discussions with the city about the plans. The cooperation has been open and smooth, as there is a shared desire to continue Ursula’s story and find responsible solutions that respect the history, fit into the Kaivopuisto landscape, and bring the building into the present. These solutions will be timeless and integrate into the evolving architecture of the South Harbor.
The difference between construction and a complete renovation is minimal from a sustainability perspective. The new building will be significantly more energy-efficient than the old one, and the materials chosen for the project will meet the requirements of sustainable development.
Ursula will be a wooden-structured restaurant building. At this stage, interior and HVAC plans have not yet been made.
